The Meaning of Flowers….

Flowers

The scene is set,
the flowers arrive
they cause quite a stir
voices raised in surprise
Do you know who sent them?
do you have the card?
anonymous you say?
Doubt difficult to disguise.
I have no idea,
I haven’t been cheating,
high moral tones,
hesitant, though fleeting…
Voices range higher
then a slammed door is heard,
What cause?  Beautiful flowers,
how utterly absurd……

  1. I very much like this. Reminds me somewhat of Dorothy Parker’s famous poem “One Perfect Rose”

  3. What fun to send an anonymous surprise to someone neglected! Do you suppose each flower, each rose, will remind her lover to be on his toes?
While she dreams within her bubble, he worries that this means trouble,
If his undivided attention to her turns, More brightly for him her heart burns.

    • My thanks to you Beth, I’ve only received three bunches of flowers in my life, one from work colleagues, one from a lovely friend who knew I was feeling down, and the other from my BF, stating everlasting love, (I haven’t lived long enough yet to test that out!!🙂 ) and yes, anonymous, makes the mind wonder how we’d react!!

    • too true, Sir Prenin, relationships can sink through any shot at the bows, and this one was such a soft attack, maybe it will recover though… my thought process comes up with all sorts of scenarios, it’s a wonder I’m sane 😉

    • Wow, oh Wow, what a great surprise that would have been, a bouquet from JD himself. Anonymous, ‘cos it would have to be, he wouldn’t want any publicity, now would he? OH yes…’twas him alright, Jenny!! 😉

  7. The only time I’ve ever gotten flowers was one yellow rose on Valentine’s Day when my brother’s friend gave it to me as a Thank You for helping him and his gf (who was one of my closest friends then) get together. One day I’d love to get a whole bouquet of them just to say that I have. And of course because they’re pretty🙂 This makes me dream!

    • Flowers say so much, I think each one has a meaning, the way they’re placed, how many there are etc… a minefield if you don’t want to send the wrong message I suppose… Dream of your bouquet, Andini, one day it will come,
This scenario I painted was a one off, just playing with ideas on a theme… xx

  9. I wonder if the game was worth the candle ! I buy my own flowers, that way no one can accuse me of cheating…..chance would be a fine thing. pen, Anyway I know that if Tango had pocket money, he’d send me flowers, but he’d probably send them to Bess first. X hugs and licks instead.

    • Ah chance, Arlene, that fickle fellow of fate and life’s mysterious twists and turns, I love the smell of flowers in a home, and they brighten the darkest room with their presence… and Bess is awaiting the first bunch from Tango, avidly staring at the door in fact, or maybe it’s a clue for me to take her out?😉 … xx

    • Glad you enjoyed it, Lady Jude, I know they say that a prickle of jealousy can stir the interest, but it can be playing with fire. But would it be worth it?…To be burnt up in the flames of a passionate embrace, oh yes..!! I think so…xx

  11. Again as in your last poem your words and scenarios paint a painful picture that is more real in some lives than is known ,

    • I know Ian, my themes of late have been a trifle sad, looking at the fallout of actions and reactions, relationships are sometimes so tender a shoot that a simple misunderstanding can create a stunted growth… This makes for scenarios that play out as in my poem, the scene is set, which way will it go? My imagination takes hold and ….xxPhotobucket

How are you and Bess? All well?

    • Happy to report that Bess is lying here by my side, Carole, bored and sighing , waiting for her outside ramble, she’s eating well, ( sighs of relief) but her arthritis is being a pain in more ways than one. This cold weather doesn’t help, maybe that’s why she’s looking at holidays in the sun brochures? 😉 …xx

  14. Hi Pen!🙂

Yes, the dream of riches has wandered through my mind more than once I have to admit!!!🙂

The odds are so extreme though that there can be little hope of my winning – even the smallest amount is so rare as to be dauntingly pointless…

Glad you had a win though hun and I hope you get the big one!!!

Today I ended up dreaming of when I was helping Becky and Emily with their homework, but was disturbed by a phone call from British Gas trying to sell me their expensive services…

The girls have been a part of my life for 36 years and I miss those days desperately because I no longer have that precious time when I was needed.

Mum says I have empty nest syndrome, so I guess this is how it feels to have a grown up family…

    Love and hugs!

    • no win for me this week , Sir Prenin, just the knowledge that some of my money will go to charity, which is a softener I suppose…I just wish a higher percentage was given away by Camelot, you would have thought they have so many people believing the ‘it could be you’ catch phrase, that they could ‘share’ more of the profits with worthy causes…. take care xx

  17. Ah, this is really interesting Pen…how something so beautiful as flowers can be the cause of friction. I guess if soembody has a secret admirer though, it could cause problems within a relationship – especially if the admirer was being so thoughtful and perhaps the partner wasn’t !😀

    Great poem! xx

    • Thanks Chloe, glad you enjoyed the scenario, it was an interesting line to take, just to see which way I could take the responses to an anonymous offering, questions and perhaps a smidgen of guilt, maybe? xx
