Comfort Me?

GaiaGaia As
bloody killing clubs rise
ending baby seals lives,
my heart doth decry
comfort me?
As
ships trawl for whales
my understanding fails
blood lust prevails
comfort me?
As
concrete coldly smothers
Mother Earth it covers
death throe shudders
comfort me?
As
Mankind was first born
from Adams rib torn
woe the day dawn
comfort me?
Can
you feel my despair?
I beg you,
have a care
I cry daily,  beware
please,
comfort me…

  1. It is our ego that makes us think we are something “other than” or “outside of” nature. Is a cat cruel when it torments its prey before killing it or is it just being true to its nature?

How fortunate we are that we live in a century when most of the items we use to cover our nakedness and protect us from the cold can be produced synthetically.

How fortunate we are to be living in a time when all we have to do is go to the grocery store and buy our food. We don’t have to track it and slay it as in times past.

But even vegetarians kill to eat and yes, the plants scream when they are plucked from the ground or hacked by threshing machines. We have instruments that can detect their screams…plants feel pain.

So what is the answer? Don’t eat anything?

    Wear no furs?

But the animals and plants are already dead…so do we now refuse to give their sacrifice any meaning? Or do we make use of these items…giving thanks to the plants and animals for the food that keeps us alive and the covering that keeps us from freezing to death?

Do we HONOUR the animal by spraypainting someone’s fur coat so that the animal’s skin winds up on the rubbish heap?

    (Strange honour, if so).

As to the question of finding some HUMANE way to kill…I am with you. There is no reason to go around clubbing baby seals so you can sell their furs. I mean, who cares if that’s all you know how to do. Who cares if you have a wife and children to support.
You can always go on welfare, I suppose.

Oh, wait…the conservatives in all countries want to do away with welfare and government sponsored child care. Well, let the children of the Seal Hunters die, then.

They aren’t as cute as baby seals, anyway.

    • Thank you for another comment showing your point of view Cassie, much appreciated, whatever the future of this Planet I feel sure we shall not go down without a fight… probably when it’s much too late… and for all the wrong reasons. x

  2. ———-Addendum to Previous Comment————–
    Pen,

It’s not like I don’t agree with you, you know. But I’m a Child of Technology too…I couldn’t bring myself to club a baby seal or hunt and kill a deer…I don’t even like to fish.

But at 61 I’ve learned that most questions aren’t as simple as they first appear. It’s alright for us to sit here with our fast food cheeseburgers that look nothing like COWS and condemn those whose lives are much different from ours.

It offends us when we learn how these Chicken Farms work http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xpSoaZHK160/TEujQDOxFBI/AAAAAAAAFrc/lbmxcIEh6Bw/s1600/20100722+egg+farm+chicken+feeders+sm.jpg and how cattle and sheep and so on are slaughtered.

Just as much as we are offended by the practices of the hunters. But is it THEY or WE who are divorced from nature?

Go to the jungle or just step into your garden. Forget all the mental images you get from poets and storytellers. Nature is all about killing and being killed…eating and being eaten…and success is judged by only one criterion…you survive.

Remember what i say now: as climate change continues (yes, kids, it IS real) the will be more and more problems. Great storms will render our technology next to useless. Many will be without electric power not for a few hours or a few days but for weeks or months. How will they survive when there is no getting to the market and no water coming out of the tap?

They won’t. I am reminded of a story from a couple of years ago when a family who was in an area where a great blizzard had hit would have died but for the help of their neighbours,

Who were Amish and therefore knew how to survive IN THE NATURAL WORLD.

    WE don’t have a clue.

There are books out there that can tell us…like the Foxfire Books….http://www.amazon.co.uk/Foxfire-Book-Dressing-Building-Mountain/dp/0385073534/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317828176&sr=1-1 but no one is reading them.

One day…probably by the time the children of the children of today are teenagers they are going to wish they had.

As for the Climate Change…don’t waste time worrying about that. It’s much too late to stop it. The time to stop it was 1952 when the Killer Fog hit London http://www.trivia-library.com/b/natural-disasters-the-london-killer-fog-of-1952-part-1.htm or, at the latest, in 1973 when “The Green Death” story was airing on DOCTOR WHO.

All we can do now is try and prepare.

    • too true Cassie, survival is the key, and we who are of the higher echelons should by rights have stepped away from the simple rule of kill or be killed, have stopped over fishing, over slaughtering, killing for pleasure, and this is not emotional oversimplification … it’s my poetic wish that we humans look to what we’re doing to the planet …before it’s too darn late… I have no doubt that the Planet will survive without us, It did do for Millions of years… We who have lived on this earth for a finger snap in time have almost brought it to it’s knees with poisoning the atmosphere, rivers and will continue to do so, without any plans for changing in the foreseeable future, with Countries expanding hot-air promises whilst keeping their fingers crossed behind their backs.. … Which to me is something to cry about… and bemoan… again and again… xx

    • Shadowcass is right – I read the warnings in science magazines when I was 10 years old, but nobody wanted to listen.

Soon it will come to pass and the crap will hit the fan, but hopefully not before I am dust.

Meanwhile the world will get weirder and weirder weather and the Oceans will die one bit at a time…

      Love and hugs!

  3. Wow very powerful messages, a great poem Lady P but also starkly true.
It seems to me the countries that have more than enough food are yet the ones who hunt and kill whales and seals and…
It seems a sensless thing, and a destructive thing, not to mention cruel!
    Beautifully written poem Lady P.

    • Thank you Nikki, I felt every word deeply whilst writing it and I hope that’s what shines through. Cruelty, destruction of habitat and killing for pleasure to name but a few symptoms of modern life, are to be abhorred, and as you so rightly say, it’s so, so senseless. xx

It might sounds crazy now to those who don't care, but they'll all realize that they were wrong as soon as this planet (Our earth) starts to crash down little by little.

  7. Not an easy poem to read Pen, in fact I almost didn’t , also such different points of view, but, I don’t see any sense in comparing us with cats or other creatures who kill, even for the fun of it, but WE are supposed to have the power of reasoning and understanding, but how often to we apply it? When it comes to the so called ‘natural blood lust’, that, IMO is just an excuse. There are unfortunately some people who have never really evolved and still have that uncivilised corner in their brain that wants to be satisfied and killing and torturing is often their way of doing it.

    • I agree with you wholeheartedly Arlene, we are surely meant to evolve to a higher plane of existence? Or else what’s the point of the past countless stages of Man? WE change and GROW, not stay the same as we were when we evolved into Stone Age People, we may as well have died out with the Neanderthals if that’s the case… xx

  8. Your words are stunningly vivid. These words remind me of the Imogen Heap song “Earth” and the sense that we are very selfish and violent at times. We are capable of such beauty, but we are so careless with our power. I appreciate your shared concern. Your words are hauntingly lovely and frightful. To where shall we look for comfort? I feel the comfort lies only in personal actions. Thank you!

    • Hello VW, many thanks for your answering and thoughtful comment, and you are so right, we are selfish and, I feel, arrogant, in our total belief that this planet is ours to do with as we will. We are mere short term tenants, liable to be evicted should we not toe the line, and not ‘clean up after ourselves.’ … My thanks to you, my friend, although the comfort I was asking?. was for Mother Earth, as she must be in such turmoil…… xx
