Odours full of memories
tinctures of days gone by,
as you inhale the scents
close your eyes and fly
right back in time
to the memory held,
let your mind flow,
let your happiness meld.
Inhale again, lock on to a scene you recall,
entranced by the seashore, the circling gulls call ,
or tramping through the wood, walking a forest floor
hearing brittle twigs snap, once, twice, thrice, more.
Suddenly seeking a known figure, surely just there?
no, just sadly mistaken, howe’er long you stare.
‘Tis bitter sweet knowledge you finally learn
you cannot go back, you cannot return.

Very true Pen! 🙂
Memory can take us back, but we can never again walk where once we trod.
Love and hugs always!

Sometimes certain scents bring back a flood of memories for me as well, Pen. Like my mom’s perfume. I rarely catch that scent from some elderly woman, but every now and then when I do, I have mom on my mind.

Very true, Lady Pen. The scent’s seem to bring on a memory much faster and stronger than any other thought inducer.

Did you intend for the shape of the poem to resemble a container that could hold a fragrance?

Oh yes, Alexander, I try to accomplish a shape which compliments the poem, it takes a while and sometimes I give up in despair. BUT this time it worked… 🙂 (after republishing it 3 times …. it wouldn’t hold central position)

The power of memory and scent is a strong thing, isn’t it? I have this happen to me all the time and I drift back trying to recall the moment where that scent engulfed me but the details are blurry and like you said, I can never go back to that time. Bittersweet indeed.

It is Andini, very strong sometimes. I suppose it depends on how much we feel the need to ‘see’ or ‘hear’ and ‘touch’ the subject of the memory… To experience the moment forever held in stasis, mayhap see a loved one’s face again. Utterly priceless… xPenx

very beautiful in every way, Pen. Scent is so powerful and as elusive as memory. That shape, too – remarkable! Love having you back. Oh, did I say that already?

That first line sparked my interest in this piece, Pen. Wow! The smell of frying chicken does it everytime. Brings my Granny and all those rich memories back to me. The smell of horses and I am back on my farm listening to them munch their evening meal and make soft nickering noises. Spring! The sweet, moist smell of spring brings back the feeling of energy and warmth of every single spring in days gone by. I like memories and accept the bad and marvel at the good ones. There’s something there that built the me I am today as I live in it. Beautiful writing, Pen.

For me it’s fried bacon, Leslie, which whisks me back to my grandmothers kitchen. But sadly not all bacon, just the dry cured has the right odour. I don’t know if it’s all in the mind, but somehow nothing tastes as good as the food she prepared. Glad you enjoyed this piece my lovely friend. xPenx

Certain smells on certain summer days takes me back to Vietnam in 1970, the scent itself brings forth memories like a kaliedoscope of images, some good , some bad.
Enjoyed reading your words Pen.

The poem feels a little sad…but it’s true what some of the commenters have said..we can really “go back in time”…there is this saying about how one can’t step into the same river twice? Everything is in motion and moving, however going back to have a look at some parts of our lives so that we may see it with new eyes, to learn and to heal can be done..even then the perception of it will be different too!

I suppose it is sad, Shree, in that we cannot step through the portal of memory and experience the ‘moment’ held stasis in time. Though the mere ability to remember and ‘feel’ the emotion enables us to relive the pleasure or pain until some sort of acceptance is learned… Who knows what may be possible in the future? I wonder… xPenx

Glad you enjoyed this one Sheila, the triggers which aid our memories to ‘see’ and almost feel the past experience seem too many to list… but I find scents are the most prolific… Hope your weekend is a good one my friend. xPenx

Hi Pen, loved the poem. I’ve been feeling very nostalgic lately.. Its so weird as we grow up we lose touch with the things that actually matter.. Just 5 min of love and peace of mind would make such a big difference.. Wish the world would go back in time, maybe to the 90s.. Good old days.. Thanks for the poem..
