I clung on in desperation as we travelled through the cool and misty tunnel of transportation, Fyrespike seemed in a desperate hurry, which didn’t bode well and I wondered what was troubling my friend. I was soon to find out. The two little demons um… babies were leading their mother (Kalaseru) father (Fyrespike) and Grandfather (Gregoryk) a merry dance. It soon transpired that none of them were getting any sleep since the two eggs had hatched 3 months ago and from the three Dragons expressions, they seemed to feel it’d been 3 long years instead… (but I’m getting ahead of myself here… lets take a small step back in time…)

I gasped, trying to catch my breath as tear after helpless tear streamed down my face. Gregoryk was in the same condition, helpless laughter echoed all round the cavern as he told me tale after tale of the hapless Knights who had turned up at his Cave entrance trying to prove themselves the bravest and the best.
Stories which he told with a quick wit and sly mischievous humour, giving me such a vivid mind picture of the events that my sense of the ridiculous was tickled again and again. IN the end I cried out for mercy ‘Oh Please, Gregoryk, please no more, I can’t breathe at all well and my eyes are so red and watery, in fact I think there’s a lash caught in my eye’ He sobered up straight away and was all concern… ‘Here take this gold mirror and see if it helps you and I think there’s a lace hankie around somewhere’ …. a comment which sent me into peals of laughter again as I thought on who might have left such a trophy, mayhap Sir Prenderghast, who left in such a hurry after Greg threatened to roast him, fully tinned, for supper. This Knight had tried to magic his way into Greg’s cave and have away with all the treasure before Greg even opened his eyes, little knowing Magic would not work against the wily Old Red Dragon. Greg had feigned sleep and gave the Knight the shock of his life, by opening one of his large eyes and saying ‘Boo’ … Which had been enough to startle said Knight who, from the aroma issuing forth, had soiled his armour quite badly before he jet propelled himself from sight never to be seen again, leaving only a monogrammed lace handkerchief to show he’d ever graced Gregoryks cave at all.
As he leaned over helpfully holding the mirror to the light, we both heard the scandalised tones of Fyrespike, “Unhand that Lady, Gregoryk or you’ll have me to answer too” He appeared out of the blue with a deadly and fierce expression on his face, clutching his Red Pipe, already fully lit and sending smoke trails enough to fill the Cavern,

I came too and all about me was darkness and an eerie bone chilling silence. I suddenly realised I was lying on a cold stone floor and hastily scrambled to my feet, whilst wondering where JD was … Surely Fyrespike had been able to compete his magic spell and I was on the Island complete with my travelling companion, somewhere hot and totally steamy? My mind started to wander and I’m sure my eyes were starting to gleam, when a faint sound alerted me I was not alone. JD?… I tried so hard to see through the gloomy darkness but I couldn’t tell if I had my eyes open or closed. as it seemed such a complete blanket of blackness. I reached out all around me, feeling relieved when my fingers came in contact with an uneven stone wall but alas, the feeling didn’t last long, as instinct or something warned me not to utter a sound, not to do the usual ‘Is anyone there?’ query those people in horror films always call out. I moved my feet cautiously, or so I thought, but I seemed to be standing on pebbles and I couldn’t move without a crunching noise issuing forth. A loud scraping sound made me freeze where I stood, and I felt my heart fighting to leave my chest as I tried and failed to hold my breath, another scraping sound followed by a deep gruff voice cursing ‘Damn and blast it’ and I knew it wasn’t JD’s lovely voice. It sounded more… Dragonish? … but before I could feel any j0y I suddenly realised it wasn’t Fyrespike’s usual dulcet tones either. ‘ Where on Earth ?’ … but before I could finish my thought a light from some source suddenly lit the room… and I could finally see where I was, in a cavern, a massive underground cavern, and my eyes opened wide in horror as I viewed the candle lighter, a gigantic old looking Red Dragon, curled on top of a huge mound of twinkling gold and jewels, and hastily looking down at my feet I saw my pebbles were in fact all manner of coloured precious stones.
His large beady eyes were rested on me, whirling with anger, (I have no idea how they whirled, but I assure you they did) they were bright red for danger and I was the sole target of his rage. “Where have you come from and what do you want in Gregoryks Cavern?” his loud gruff voiced almost blasted in my ears, also making my eyes water with the stench of his breath which wafted in a few seconds behind his words. I assumed he was Gregoryk, or else he was helpfully Cave minding? … I coughed and tried desperately to clear my throat enough to speak, finally able to gasp out loud “My name is Lady Pen, friend of Fyrespike” and I added for good measure even though it wasn’t true, “ and of Kalaseru his mate” A loud rumbling noise shocked me enough to make me hastily back away a few steps, but then I stood my ground in amazement as he opened his long muzzle wide, showing me his darkened but still sharply pointed dangerous looking teeth, as he laughed, coughed heavily and then laughed again, so hard this time that his eyes now a light golden colour, ran with tears. “Oh my, that’s a good one” he growled again but thankfully in an amused tone, “A friend of my daughters you say? Now that I find hard to believe” and my heart sank to my shoes and I waited, for what I do not know, but I seemed to be flying from one dangerous place to another … and suddenly my wayward mind grasped what Gregoryk had said, he was Kalaseru’s father? ‘Oh my indeed…whatever next?’ ……

“Lady Pen?..” a hesitant voice invaded my worried thoughts as I hung in mid air, (mainly ones about joining my office colleagues down in the car park, head first and then totally flattened) but I tried hard to concentrate on Fyrespikes serious voice. “are you ok?” and just as I was about to splutter that I had been better and then scream ‘HELP ME’ in capitals, than he did just that by transporting me directly to his lair. Standing there, suddenly safe and sound, I was still shaking with fright and trying hard not to sniff the scent of burning rocks and some other added aroma as Fyrespike did his housekeeping. He was tidying up by sending his breath of flame to first char and then turn to dust any spare animal bone or hint of carcass, thus getting rid of the evidence of his meal the night before. He looked slightly sheepish, ( making me wonder if that had been the unfortunate ready meal) and failed to meet my eyes as he apologised saying “ Sorry about the mess, but I’ve been so busy lately and Kalaseru’s constant and ever changing demands are getting my goat” .. (ah.. last nights meal was maybe goat then?) … “Kindly be serious Lady Pen” he chastised me having read my wayward thoughts, “and for your information it was Tinned Knight” and at my gasp of surprise and shock he responded “See? I can do funnies too you know” then continued “BUT kindly listen to what I say and consider it seriously as this could be a very dangerous time for you”… So I reigned in my thoughts and tried hard to concentrate on what he was about to tell me. “Kalaseru is pregnant, she’s totally off the scale and just a tad unreliable. I’m having to spend all my time trying to find food and treasures enough to fill her demands, and there’s still two more weeks to go before the Egg or Eggs” at this his eyes turned all glowing warm and watery “ are laid and thankfully her mind will be totally concerned with caring for them and their safety.” In response I didn’t know what to think or to say first, all my thoughts were jumbled between danger from Kalseru in her condition and sheer happiness at Fyrespikes impending parenthood and they were fighting each other for utterance. Congratulations won the day, “ Fyrespike I’m so, so pleased for you, you’re soon to be a father? That’s such wonderful news” and I leant forward and kissed his now glowing red cheeks. (not a good look usually, a Green Dragon with rosy red cheeks but I think he carried it off with aplomb) His eyes went even more watery and shone with pride, then he coughed on his always handy Red Pipe “ Why thank you Lady Pen, it’s a very traumatic and emotional time, but it’ll be truly worth it when the Egg or Eggs finally hatch. Now you must understand me, My Mate is in hormone overdrive and you have become an easy target for her rages, so I think I’d best hide you for the next two weeks. Is there anywhere you’ve always wanted to be? Anywhere at all?” My eyes glazed over as my mind wandered through varying scenarios with JD, “Think Seriously” thundered Fyrespike, “just viable destinations only please” and I tried so hard, I truly did, but still my mind went it’s own merry way, a Desert Island, a comfortable grass hut, a short walk down to a wonderful golden sandy beach, plenty of fresh water, food to hand and Johnny. As I came back ever so slowly from dreamland I heard him sigh deeply, completely exasperated with me, until suddenly a twinkling glint appeared in his eyes and I warily asked what he was thinking. “Well, I couldn’t in all honesty magic the real Johnny Depp for you, but would a clone version do? As a stand in type of thing? He’d to all intents and purposes be JD only not, if you understand me? He’d be your fantasy for a short time, and then Whooosh!! no more” My eyes glazed over again, and I imagined the sight, sound and feel of two weeks on a desert Island with JD ( or near enough JD) … “Could he wear the pirates outfit Fyrespike? Full regalia?” and he sent a look skywards whilst muttering to himself, I didn’t quite catch the words but I thought better to leave it for now. “Right then Lady Pen, for all intents and purposes you are now out of the loop, My lady love Kalaseru will not be able to find you, and I’ll magic up a Desert Island with relevant host and enough supplies etc… for two weeks, is that ok?” … “Ok?” I gasped, “OK? It’ll be heaven Fyrespike, sheer, glorious heaven.” and I hugged, kissed and then danced about him, screaming with happiness… Already thinking of what I needed to pack for my travels, BUT…. too late, the Green Dragon was already raising his pipe, mumbling the words to set the spell in motion, and I was suddenly held aloft in mid air as reality whirled about me, and everything turned black… with a few sparkling white bits… but more black than white!! … Then just before total blackout I heard Kalaseru’s unmistakeable deep tones… and …. darkness hit me..

I was so deep in thought when the Director put his head around my office door saying “It’s ok Pen, we’re just testing the fire alarm,” that I didn’t really take any notice, just went back to staring at the set of figures which wouldn’t add up and sighed, thinking, “Shame it couldn’t be a real alarm, then I could have a rest from this mind twister” and no sooner thought than done. There was a smell of smoke outside my door, people were quickly hurrying down to their allotted fire wardens and in a quick and orderly manner were exiting the building, although I hadn’t noticed any of this, I was tied up mind wise, but suddenly ‘Are you coming or not?’ queried a voice I hadn’t heard before, female but with a sort of deep gravelly but sexy undertone. ‘You know my mate Fyrespike’ she offered to my scattering thoughts, ‘ he wanted me to come and introduce myself, I’m Kalaseru,’ and with that sudden announcement in dramatic tones, (I almost expected a drum roll) a large Red Dragon appeared. I gulped, then proffered a hastily stitched together smile, and coughed (the smoke you know?). Then, as she looked at my strange frozen expression with a sly gleam in her gorgeous blue eyes, (such a shade of deep blue that I found myself almost mesmerised) I tried to put together a sentence through a mouth that had suddenly dried and finally succeeded in pulling my tongue from the roof of my mouth, offering ‘Um … hello, Fyrespike did say you’d drop by but never said exactly when’ to which she responded with a hearty roar of laughter, making smoke roll forth up to the ceiling and a small flash of flame leap out and set fire to the plastic on my stapler. I hastily grabbed my paperwork and fanned the flames only making things worse, and my stapler just simply half melted. Strange how such a little thing could make such a mess I thought to myself, as it almost stuck to the table and then dripped steadily onto the hardwood floor. ‘Um, is Fyrespike dropping by?’ I added, which stopped her laughter stone cold, and her gaze hardened, ‘I don’t think he’ll be dropping by ever again. Our agreement for mate-ship has a clause banning contact with mortals.’ I stared worriedly at her large Red Dragon face, and the bared teeth and fangs she was suddenly proffering to me in the travesty of a human type smile. ‘Surely my friendship with Fyrespike isn’t a problem? He’s been such a help to me and his continued support would be something I’d be grateful for, and of course you too, Kalaseru.” I weakly tried to smile “Since the Meeting of Souls I’ve felt as if we three had a bond to share’ as I thoughtlessly added this rider, I felt the air suddenly thrum with danger. Too late I remembered Fyrespike’s warning about not sharing our ‘meeting’ souls wise, as it was against any agreement he’d had with his mate. … The atmosphere suddenly thinned, and I found myself hanging in mid-air outside my office window, staring down at my work mates grouped in the fire alarm position in the Car Park….
